Since the discussion came up I figured I read up on the rules and post what I found on other sites. Option #1SECR page 155 under "Burst Radius" "Grenades and explosives usually have a Burst Radius. When you make an attack with such a weapon, you must decide where to center the burst before making the attack roll. The center of a burst is always a corner of a square (at the "crosshairs"). Thus when you have a Burst/Blast Radius of 2, you target a point which affects the 4 squares that form the point, plus the squares adjacent to those. Or, in other words, 2 squares out from the point. A 2 square burst affects 12 squares. A 3 square burst affects This is different from, for example, the Combustion Force Power which affects a 2x2 square area, or 4 squares. Something that targets a 3x3 square area affects 9 squares. And further different is splash weapons, which target a square rather than a point, so it's affected area is larger than either. Here, I made these to illustrate: Area Effect Red: 2 square area Blue: 3 square area Burst/Blast Radius Yellow: Target Point Red: 2 square Burst/Blast Blue: 3 square Burst/Blast Splash Radius Yellow: Target Square Red: 2 Square Splash Blue: 3 Square Splash Green: 4 Square Splash

Option #2Q: What does a cone in Saga look like? What about a Burst or Splash? A: For the sake of consistency, area effects have the same shape and area that they did in the revised rules and in Dungeons & Dragons. BURSTS The Red Squares are a 1 square burst. The Blue Squares are a 2 square burst. The Green Squares are a 3 square burst. The Yellow Squares are a 4 square burst. CONES The cone starts at an intersection on the battle grid (one of the corners of your space) and then extends outward for 6 squares in a 90-degree arc. Unlike normal range calculations, however, count diagonals using the old method -- that is, 1 square for the first and all odd diagonals, and 2 squares for the second and all even diagonals. SPLASH The red square is no splash. Blue squares are 1 square splash. X Splash means you have a circle with radius X. That means the green squares are radius 2, the yellow squares are radius 3, and the purple squares are radius 4.

Explanations:
Option #1 is the rule we will use. However per saga rules it is wrong but the way we've house ruled diagonal movement we most fit this option.
Option #2 is the correct way the damage is supposed to happen in Saga. The difference is the diagonal movement is counted as two squares rather than one. That is why the area of effect is more flower looking than square.
