June 7, 1985 -- that's 25 years ago today -- a generation of kids witnessed the release of beloved adventure film, 'The Goonies.' If you're not familiar with the story of Mikey, Chunk and the rest of the gang, we're sorry you had a such a deprived childhood. You should probably call out of work, buy or rent the DVD and watch it immediately.
But if you're concerned with losing your job, 'The Goonies' tells the story of Mikey Walsh, big brother Brandon, and friends Mouth, Chunk, Data, Andy, and Stef as they set out on a quest to discover the lost treasure of the pirate One-Eyed Willie. They hope the treasure will give them the money they need to save their "Goon Docks" neighborhood from foreclosure. As if they weren't racing against time already, they accidentally draw the attention of the murderous -- but slightly incompetent -- Fratelli crime family, which also wants the pirate loot. There are underground water slides, sword fights, and plenty of booty booby traps to turn the film into a modern classic.
The city of Astoria, Oregon, served as 'Goonies' headquarters, with various real locations used as important points of the story. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film, Astoria is currently holding an anniversary celebration, with fans from all over the country visiting the real sites from the movie, and getting the chance to meet some of the film's stars, who are currently in town. For those who can't make it to Astoria this week, we're offering a virtual tour of the film's most notable locations: the Clatsop County Jail, the Captain George Flavel House Museum, and the residence of Mikey and Brandon Walsh.

Location as Character: 'The Goonies' begins with the daring jail break-out of Jake Fratelli. The Clatsop County Jail served as the setting for Ma Fratelli's gasoline-and-flames-aided prison raid.
Mikey's father works as curator at the Captain George Flavel House Museum. It's his job as curator of Astoria's fabled history, that plants the tale of One-Eyed Willie in Mikey's head, and causes the whole treasure hunt to take place.
Mikey's house -- the one that is in danger of being torn down -- is Goonies headquarters. It is where they hang out, watch Cyndi Lauper music videos, and break a piece off of Mrs. Walsh's favorite statue.
Historical Significance: The Clatsop County Jail was closed down in 1976. After 'The Goonies' made the location famous to a new audience, it became a tourist attraction for movie-lovers who wanted a taste of the real-life "Goon Docks." The building has been converted into the Oregon Film Museum, celebrating Oregon's long history as a popular film-making location for many Hollywood films (from 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' to the 'Twilight' saga).
The Captain George Flavel House Museum was built by Capt. George Flavel (obviously), who operated the first pilot service over the Columbus River bar, in turn becoming Astoria's first millionaire. Used as his home upon retirement, the house was eventually transferred to the Clatsop County Historical Society, and listed under the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the house serves as a model for Victorian-era architecture in the Pacific Northwest.
Mikey's house is currently owned by Sandi Preston, a hardcore 'Goonies' fan who loved the movie so much, that she bought the 'Goonies' headquarters, to make it her own home.
Directions: The Clatsop County Jail/Oregon Film Museum is located at 732 Duane St. The Captain George Flavel House Museum is located at 441 8th Street. And Mikey's house is located at 368 38th St.
From the Film Museum, head west on Duane St. toward 7th St. Take the first left onto 7th St. and then the next left onto 8th St. (it's only a minute away). After you soak in some of Astoria's historical flavor, finish up your trip at the fictional Walsh residence. Heading north on 8th, take the first right onto Commercial St., continuing onto Marine Dr., then Leif Erickson Dr.
Take a right at 37th St., then your first left onto Duane St. Finally, turn left at 38th St. and you are there.
Visitor Info: The Clatsop County Jail/Oregon Film Museum is open daily from 10AM to 5PM.
The Captain George Flavel House Museum is available for daily visits: 9:30AM to 5PM for the months of April to October, and 11:00am to 4:00pm for the months of November to March.
